Grey Gardens follows Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edith "Little Edie" Beale, who live together in the family home in East Hampton, New York. Filmed over several months, the documentary draws its portrait of the two women through the conversations that fill their days, touching on family, former relationships, Little Edie's ambitions and the many years they have spent together at Grey Gardens. Their closeness sits beside a great deal of tension, and much of the film unfolds through the friction of living together.

Throughout the film, Little Edie keeps returning to clothes and persona. She explains her outfits as she puts them together, adjusting them along the way and bringing objects from around the house into what she wears. As she talks through what she is wearing, she recalls family and her life at Grey Gardens, puzzling over questions of age and beauty. "I have to think these things up, you know," she says while describing what she calls her "revolutionary costume”. That process of invention has made Little Edie an enduring fashion reference. In Grey Gardens, personal style feels alive and provisional, worked out through circumstance and personal choice. The documentary later became a reference point for fashion collections and magazine editorials, and inspired the 2009 HBO film Grey Gardens, starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.
