Screening: Instrument

Thursday, August 20, 2026 – 18:00

Cinemateket

Instrument follows American post-hardcore band Fugazi over the course of eleven years, taking us from concerts and life on tour into the studio. Made up of archival footage shot between 1987 and 1998, the film spans the years in which Fugazi established themselves as one of the most influential bands in American alternative music.

The documentary captures American alternative DIY culture as it looked in the late 1980s and 1990s, while keeping the people around Fugazi in view through footage of audiences waiting in ticket lines and understated interviews recorded on the curb. The band became known for refusing to sell merchandise and for keeping ticket prices low in an effort to make their concerts accessible. Their clothes carry the visual codes of hardcore punk and the looser feel of college slacker style, with workwear appearing throughout. Seen now, some of these looks seem strikingly close to what would later be called normcore.

The screening will be introduced by poet Morten Langeland and artist Per-Oskar Leu.
