Screening: Slaves of New York

Tuesday, February 3, 2026 – 17:00Tuesday, February 3, 2026 – 19:00

Slaves of New York portrays the downtown art scene in New York at the end of the 1980s, a milieu marked by limited resources and persistent hopes of a breakthrough. Adapted from Tama Janowitz’s cult short stories, the film centers on Eleanor, an aspiring hat designer attempting to establish herself. She moves within a loosely connected circle of artists, performers, sex workers, and hangers-on, each grappling with unstable work, strained relationships, financial uncertainty, and dreams of success.

James Ivory approaches this street-level environment through episodic encounters that capture moments of humor alongside experiences that feel acutely familiar. Seen today, Slaves of New York stands as a portrait of the city before gentrification transformed its social fabric. The film provides insight into a cultural moment defined by freedom, vulnerability, and open-ended possibility.

The screening will be introduced by curator Geir Haraldseth.

This is the sixth screening as part of "Fabricated Frames", a monthly film club curated by International Library of Fashion Research at Cinemateket in Oslo. Get your tickets now via cinemateket.no. See you Tuesday February 3rd at 18.00!
