Screening: Sunset Boulevard

Tuesday, January 13, 2026 – 17:00Tuesday, January 13, 2026 – 19:30

This dark, claustrophobic metafilm features a striking performance by Gloria Swanson. Norma Desmond, a former silent film star, lives in isolation in a decaying mansion, surrounded by relics, props, and memories from a world that has long since moved on without her. Disillusioned by Hollywood’s evolution, she clings to the belief that a triumphant return to the spotlight is still within reach.

Joe Gillis, a screenwriter in dire financial straits, agrees to help her develop a new project. He soon realises, however, that this opportunity draws him far deeper into Norma’s enclosed universe. As he becomes embedded in the house and its peculiar rhythms, it becomes increasingly clear that Norma’s vision of the future rests on illusion and self-deception.

The costumes for Sunset Boulevard were designed by Edith Head, one of Hollywood’s most influential costume designers. Norma Desmond’s wardrobe, rich with furs, turbans, lamé fabrics, and ornate jewellery, blends the diva aesthetics of the silent era with 1950s fashion. These costumes are central to understanding the character’s complex psychology, functioning as an extension of her identity and her refusal to fade into obscurity.

The screening will be introduced by Norwegian author Hans Petter Blad.

This is the fifth screening as part of "Fabricated Frames", a monthly film club curated by International Library of Fashion Research at Cinemateket in Oslo. Get your tickets now via cinemateket.no. See you Tuesday January 13th at 18.00!
